The Surgery and Anaesthetic Division are delighted to announce the opening of a new, fast flow 35-bedded unit based on ward C22 at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital (level 3) to replace the current Surgical Triage Unit (STU).

Emergency Surgical Unit (ESU)

opens on:

Saturday 28 December 2019

This development is part of the ongoing redesign of the acute surgical pathway to improve patient experience and flow. As you may know, we opened the Surgical Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit in January 2019 which is for medically stable, mobile patients who need an urgent surgical opinion.

The ESU is the next stage of development and aims to improve patient care by reducing unnecessary ward moves and improved continuity of care. ESU will operate as an emergency admission point for urgent surgical patients who you feel are unwell enough to require admission or who are immobile and unsuited to waiting in a clinic environment.
