The post-natal ward based at Lancashire Women's and Newborn Centre has raised £190.18 for the hospital’s charity, ELHT&Me, from collection tins at the tea and coffee stations, and a raffle.

Following this success, staff have launched a raffle to raise money for the charity, to purchase vinyl wall decorations for the ward. This includes a ‘Welcome’ sign in many different languages, a friendly message for the patients of all nationalities and backgrounds who are admitted to the ward, at Burnley General Teaching Hospital.

Prizes include baby hampers with nappies, wipes and baby bath products, toiletry sets and booze hampers, kindly donated by patients and members of the public. The raffle will run until 31 May 2019, and to enter, visit the post-natal ward at the Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre or contact Jayne Case (Jayne.Case@elht.nhs.uk).

Jayne Case, a midwife on the ward who has coordinated fundraising and will be running the Burnley 10K, said: “We are so proud of the money we’ve raised so far, and we’re looking forward to collecting more donations to purchase these much-needed new items. The staff, as well as patients and their friends and family, have all got behind the cause and we’re really grateful. Hopefully we can reach our ambitious target!”These smaller fundraising efforts build up to an ambitious £3,000 campaign that the ward are hoping to use to purchase reclining maternity chairs and ice and water dispensers, to improve the experience of new mums on the ward and make them more comfortable post-birth. As part of this campaign, two members of the ward staff team are also signed up to run the Burnley 10K for Team ELHT&Me.

Emma Heinicke Community Fundraiser for ELHT&Me, said: “These fundraisers are a fantastic example of how wards with ideas in mind to improve patient care, can access the funds they need to make those ideas happen by raising them for ELHT&Me.”

“Every penny donated to ELHT&Me is spent in the ward or department it was intended for, allowing staff to raise money for their own wards and encourage patients and their families to donate when they are pleased with the care they receive.”

“If any ward or department is inspired to fundraise too, I would encourage them to get in touch with ELHT&Me by emailing fundraising@elht.nhs.uk”.
