A special Quiet Room where patients and their families go for some peace during the most difficult days of their lives has opened at Burnley General Teaching Hospital.

Charity stalwarts Sarah Bernasconi (Maggie Pearl Parsons Legacy) and Jo Edwards (Friends of Serenity) cut the ribbon to officially open the new Quiet Room on the Gynaecology and Breast Care ward, made possible by a joint £2,500 donation from the two charities.

Tracy Bracewell, Lead Nurse for Gynae Oncology, described the Quiet Room as ‘a private and welcoming environment which makes a real difference for patients’.

"With the valued support of Joanne Edwards, Sarah Bernasconi and their two charities, we’ve been able to create a beautiful, serene space for women and families to visit when they are in distress," she said.

"This is a room with a very specific use - for women who have had a miscarriage and those facing a difficult time due to cancer, who want to reflect with their family members and need a private place for solitude."

Ward staff chose a calming light purple colour theme for the Quiet Room’s chairs, curtains, wall coverings and furnishings.

“There has been a lot of hard work and collaboration to bring together this fabulous room,” said Bereavement Midwife, Louise Bardon. “I know how much it will mean to the women and families who need such a quiet and serene place.”

“In addition, we want to thank Sarah and Jo for all the wonderful work they have done for our Trust. Without their help, the level of care and support we provide for bereaved women and families would not have been possible.”
