Epilepsy, Neurology & Neurodisability

We have weekly paediatric epilepsy clinics on Mondays alternating between Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital sites run by Dr Rakshi, Dr Nair and Dr Belderbos, Consultant Paediatricians.

Visiting specialist neurologists run clinics to see patients referred on by the paediatric team: Dr De Goede from Royal Preston Hospital and Dr Hughes from Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.  

As a department we are engaged in national audit and research including the recent Epilepsy 12 and NASH National Audits and nationwide UKISS studies.  

We have a newly appointed epilepsy nurse specialist who offers telephone contact with patients and advice for schools and professionals.

Denise Murray is our Paediatric Epilepsy Specialist Nurse who works closely with Dr Rakshi, Dr Nair and Dr Belderbos. in supporting children and families who have epilepsy.

She will offer support to the child/young person and the family in relation to coming to terms with a diagnosis of epilepsy; advice on medication and how to give this, and support when medication has been changed or is to be discontinued.

Training for the family in relation to the use of Buccalam Midazolam rescue medication and also training and advice for the Universal Health Visitor and School Nursing teams across East Lancashire in relation to writing health care plans, administration of medication and supporting the school nurses when they have to offer advice in an educational setting.

Denise will offer support and advice to children with complex health needs and epilepsy who are under the care of Dr Perera, Community & Neurodevelopmental Consultant Paediatrician, at the Royal Blackburn Hospital, and Dr De Goede, Consultant Paediatric Neurologist based at the Royal Preston Hospital but carries out joint clinics with Dr Perera at the Royal Blackburn Hospital and Shadsworth Children's Centre in Blackburn.
