Children with endocrine conditions in East Lancashire are managed jointly between hospitals in East Lancashire and the children’s hospital in Manchester. Dr Chris Gardner is the lead consultant for paediatric endocrinology in East Lancashire, and works closely with the Endocrine Team at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Dr Gardner trained in paediatric endocrinology at Alder Hey children’s hospital prior to undertaking research and has published research on endocrine problems in both children and adults. He is a member of the British Society of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes.
Joint clinics are held at the Royal Blackburn hospital twice yearly with Dr Gardner, Dr Mars Skae, visiting paediatric endocrinologist from the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Elaine O’Shea, Endocrine Specialist nurse at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Many children can be entirely managed in East Lancashire, and the Day Case Unit on ward 27 at Burnley General Hospital have experience in carrying out many specialised hormone tests.
