Children's Diabetes

What we do

We are the largest district general hospital children’s diabetes team in the northwest. Based at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, our team currently consists of two Consultant Paediatricians, Dr Gardner and Dr Del-Rio, six Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Peter Doyle, Vicky Phillips, Clair Kneale, Carol Wade, Mary Nightingale and Karen Smith and two paediatric Diabetes Dieticians, Alison Ashworth and Julie Wood. We also have a Health Care Assistant called Paula Smith who you will see when you come to clinic. Paula also work along side the Dietitians as a support worker with another team member called Adrian Martin.  Our Office admin who may answer the phone is Catherine Fletcher.

We cover the whole of East Lancashire and care for around 300 children with Type 1 diabetes as well as children with complex diabetes syndromes.  Our team provides a dedicated flexible and dynamic service for children with diabetes.  We support and educate all our patients and families to manage their long term condition, whilst recognising and working within religious and cultural practices.

Our team focuses on educating patients and families about the condition from the patient’s diagnosis onwards. This gives them the skills and knowledge to be able to manage the condition independently without constant supervision and repeated hospital admissions.

We have a number of children on insulin pumps and this service continues to expand.  We see the children and young people every three months in clinic with a full multidisciplinary team of professionals in attendance; we also see and contact the families in between these appointments.  We encourage and support the families to be empowered with their diabetes management,  we have strong links with the adult service and run a transition clinic at Blackburn and Burnley for those young people moving through to adulthood. This is where they will meet the transition nurses Helen Cockett and Susan Starkie and Adult diabetes consultant Dr Margaret Christian.

Our team focuses on educating patients and families about the condition from the patient’s diagnosis onwards. This gives them the skills and knowledge to be able to manage the condition independently without constant supervision and repeated hospital admissions.

We cover children with diabetes from Birth to 19 years old.  From birth to 16 years we have a general paediatric clinic that caters for this age range.

Once they reach 16 years old we start to see them in our transition clinic.  This is held within the adult clinic at Burnley General Teaching Hospital and the adult diabetes unit at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital.  During this 3 year period they are introduced to our Transition Nurses, adult dietitians an our adult diabetologist. This process allows the patient to gain more independence and gets them transitioning to an adult based service.

We offer evening education sessions for parents and children.  We are a part of the North West Regional Diabetes Network and we submit data to the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA)   Our services average HBA1c is below that of  the national average and one of the lowest in the North West.
